Fall education scenarios could be revealed soon: NESD Director of Education

The North East School Division (NESD) is awaiting the province’s plan for re-opening schools.

Students and teachers have been participating in supplemental learning curriculum since the province shut down schools in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Director of Education Don Rempel told northeastNOW that education is in phase five of the government’s Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan.

“Whether we reach phase five of Re-open Saskatchewan by September or not, we’ve been assured that some form of education will be provided to our families come Sept. 1,” Rempel said.

He said they hope to have some direction in the coming days from the provincial response planning team on different scenarios for the upcoming school year.

“It may not be actually decided upon what September looks like until mid-summer, but we’ll have a few scenarios of what school could look like that we could share,” Rempel said.

The division has allotted some time to communicate with families about what next year might look like, and teachers and staff will then have some planning time in the last week of June.

He said the division will likely be in touch with parents by mid-August as to the logistics of delivering education in the fall. Rempel added re-opening plans may vary slightly among school divisions, and even communities.

“There will be provincial direction, but there will be a fair bit of local latitude and autonomy,” Rempel said. “I think you can anticipate that there might almost be regional circumstances moving forward, such as we’ve seen in the province if there’s an outbreak in one community, you might have a change in plan.”

In a local outbreak scenario, Rempel said the students could go from in-school learning back to online education for a period of time.

Rempel said he has been encouraged by the participation of NESD students and families working with their teachers during the supplemental learning phase, and the division looks forward to putting plans in place for the fall.
