Another Black Lives Matter peaceful protest planned for Tuesday

Jun 8, 2020 | 2:00 PM

The Black Lives Matter (BLM) peaceful protests in North Battleford will continue Tuesday.

Two events were held Friday – a walk downtown and at the outdoor track behind the Civic Centre.

The upcoming event June 9 will start at about 4 p.m. on 100 Street at 12 Avenue. Participants will walk along 100 Street, turning at 14 Avenue to outside North Battleford Library where they will gather and conduct a sit in.

Organizers Alex Anderson and Naomi MacAloney are asking people to wear masks and gloves as a COVID-19 precaution, and keep social distancing protocols in mind as much as possible.

“No matter the weather; [we] hope to see you there,” they said on their Facebook message.

MacAloney said it is important for people to do what they can to try to stop racism in society.

“I’m pretty sure everybody is just sick of police brutality towards people of colour and our Indigenous people,” she said. “It has just gone way too far. My generation here is demanding a change, and we are going to make it happen.”

MacAloney will turn 20 years old Tuesday and thought the protest would be a positive way to mark the milestone. She wants her children of Indigenous heritage to know how she helped make a change for the better in the world.

“When they get older I want to be able to tell them I was a part of the change, and that is how I chose to celebrate my 20th birthday,” she said. “I just want them to be proud of me.”

Organizers suggest people attending the event bring water and snacks for themselves as they will not be provided. They are also recommend participants may want to bring a lawn chair or something comfortable to sit on if they wish.

They want to remind people this will be a peaceful protest.

During the event, some of the participants also plan to lie face down with their hands behind their backs in the same position George Floyd was held by Minneapolis, U.S., police for almost nine minutes when he died May 25.

Hayley Sinclair was among the organizers of the events Friday in support of the BLM cause.

The 17 year old helped organize the peaceful protest walk downtown.

“It went better than I thought it would be,” she said, adding about 25 people took part. “I didn’t know that many people supported the movement. I was proud of everyone who showed up.”
