Firework display will commemorate Canada Day in Melfort

The City of Melfort will still commemorate Canada Day this year but as most other things during the COVID-19 pandemic, celebrations will look a little different.

Instead of the usual day of events for residents and families, there will be a large firework display in the evening.

Committee member Gail Marie Anderson said vehicles will park in the mall parking lot and will be separated by 15 feet due to the COVID-19 restrictions put in place by Saskatchewan Public Health officials.

“We can’t really all be together but we can still celebrate Canada Day in a unique way for 2020,” Anderson said.

Last year’s events saw hundreds come together inside the Northern Lights Palace for ceremonies, a decorated bike parade, children’s activities as well as a barbecue lunch.

This year, a firework display will be set up behind the Melfort mall so that it will be easily viewed by those parked in the lot.

“We will have volunteers monitoring the parking lot and we will have something into effect to help manage that as well,” Anderson said.

Melfort residents are accustomed to seeing fireworks on the fair weekend at the Agricultural Society but with the cancellation of that event, this will be a chance for that summer tradition to continue.

Anderson expects the fireworks will begin at around 10:30 p.m. and vehicles can begin parking at 9:30 p.m.

“There are a couple of other things that we are working on in connection to the fireworks display but for now we are working on putting together a huge firework show,” Anderson said.

As the curator of the Melfort and District Museum, Anderson said the museum is still closed to the public at this time.

“We are in phase four so we don’t know yet when we will open but when we are open, we will be able to monitor with social distancing and it shouldn’t be a problem for tours,” Anderson said.

More announcements on the museum as well as Canada Day celebrations are expected in the coming weeks.
