Humboldt StreetFest cancelled for 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the cancellation of another local event.

The Humboldt Downtown Business Improvement District (BID) has announced the cancellation of the 2020 StreetFest.

BID administrator Brent Fitzpatrick told northeastNOW it’s the right thing to do.

“Although we don’t know what’s going to be happening come that Aug. 8 weekend, I just think that it’s very prudent of the board of directors who have decided ‘let’s just make the call, and just say next year is going to be bigger and better than ever,” Fitzpatrick said.

He said a lot of the vendors that would participate in StreetFest needed an answer so they could plan their summer, and the BID was unable to make any commitments at this time.

StreetFest featured shops and businesses in the downtown core throwing open their doors, Fitzpatrick said, highlighted by sidewalk sales, entertainment, and food vendors.

“It’s a couple of days of making that core area a hub of activity,” Fitzpatrick said.

A news release said the BID “will be beginning a significant Shop Local campaign in the weeks ahead featuring the businesses in our downtown core.” The campaign will highlight the businesses, and what they offer to Humboldt and area residents.

“We’re going to be kind of switching gears for 2020 into a focus on making people aware of what’s available downtown, and there is a lot available downtown in Humboldt, and so this [campaign] is going to do that,” Fitzpatrick said.

With phase three of the provincial government’s Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan now underway, more local businesses will be open. That includes restaurants, which are able to offer dine-in services, with 50 per cent seating capacity and social distancing rules in effect.

“It’s just going to be different, but these are people that are saying ‘we want you to come back’, so let’s make sure we get out there and support them,” Fitzpatrick said.

StreetFest is scheduled to return in August 2021.
