Melfort City Hall reopens

Melfort City Hall re-opening on Monday

Jun 8, 2020 | 8:00 AM

City Hall in Melfort is re-opening June 8 as part of Phase 3 of the province’s Re-open Saskatchewan Plan.

The facility has been closed since the provincial government declared a state of emergency in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Director of development, planning and community relations Brent Lutz told northeastNOW that City Hall’s front desk will re-open June 8 at 8 a.m. and will close at 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Lutz said there will be a few differences people will notice when they come to City Hall for the first time.

“There are some directions and processes when you enter the building, there will be a sanitation station there, and there are some stanchions there to help you form a line and maintain social distance,” Lutz said.

There are also barriers to protect the public, and city staff. A limit of three customers will be allowed in at one time.

The Play Melfort Community Ambassador Program is also being launched June 8.

“This program has been developed to enable the community to address some of the needs of the public during COVID, and still keep our community active and involved,” Lutz said.

He said five ambassadors will be working in the program throughout June and July, engaging all ages in safe activities that can take place in various open spaces. A social media campaign will advise people of what is happening, when it is taking place, and how they can get involved.

Several local recreational facilities that had been closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic re-opened on Friday.

Another facility is opening later this week.

The City’s new water fill station will open at Broadway Ave. N. on Wednesday. The fill station at the regional water treatment plant closed in April due to plant upgrades.

Lutz said many agricultural neighbours who need access to bulk water will be glad to see the facility up and running.

Playgrounds, the spray park, basketball courts, baseball diamonds, and indoor recreation facilities remain closed to the public.
