NESPCA Caged for Critters fundraiser brings in over $16,000

The North East SPCA’s latest fundraiser was a huge success.

‘Caged for Critters’ was held June 1 to 5 at the Harry and Eve Vickar Shelter. Five shelter employees slept in kennels that week to raise money for the SPCA’s programming. Mystery guests also brought in pledges to be ‘freed’ from their kennels.

“After the whole week we ended up making over $16,000,” shelter manager Kristy Mason told northeastNOW. “It has been absolutely amazing, we are definitely very sore but it was a lot of fun and we had an overwhelming amount of support come in from all over the place.

Mason said they were surprised at the strong support, receiving donations from Alberta and Manitoba.

“People [were] touching base with their friends and their family, it’s been crazy, it’s been so good,” Mason said.

The unique aspect of the fundraiser seemed to strike a chord with many people, according to Mason. She said the fundraiser is something different that many haven’t seen before, and is a lot of fun.

Mason said the mystery guests, including Nipawin mayor Rennie Harper, Melody Motors owner Ken Madraga and others, did an amazing job.

“We are so happy that they decided to participate. They really worked hard to harass all their family and friends to try to make that bail money,” Mason said.

The North East SPCA is now gearing up for its next Facebook auction this month.

“Otherwise, we’re just kind of playing it by ear and doing what we can during this pandemic,” Mason said.
