Heat, thundershowers expected this weekend

The Battlefords region is going to have its first summer heat wave.

Weather forecasts are calling for the first weekend of temperatures getting into the high 20’s, peaking on Saturday at 30 Celsius. Meteorologist Terri Lang said it’s reflective of previous years.

“Typical Saskatchewan summer weather that we are getting into,” she said. “Not enough for a heat advisory, but certainly it’s warmer than it’s been this year.”

Because the shift in weather comes during a pandemic, Land said it’s especially important people understand the risks of staying outside in the sun too long with refreshment or breaks.

“Sometimes people over do it,” she said. “So staying hydrated, seeking shade, not going out during the hottest part of the day.”

Along with the shift in heat, there’s an increased chance of thundershowers throughout the weekend, particularly from Saturday evening to Monday afternoon. Lang said people should be prepared to change plans if they plan to spend most of the weekend outdoors.

“Any time a thunderstorm approaches, it’s time to pack up and get to safety before the storm actually hits,” she said. “Not while it’s hitting.”

Land recommended anyone heading for the weekend to look at the forecast before leaving and watch out for alerts.

“Pay heed to watches and warnings, be aware of it and move beforehand,” she said.
