Canada Day fireworks postponed, Fort Battleford event cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions

Similar to many other communities, it will be a different and much quieter Canada Day in the Battlefords on July 1 due to the province’s COVID-19 restrictions.

Parks Canada announced the Canada Day events at Fort Battleford National Historic Site have been cancelled for this year because of the restrictions for gatherings.

Fort Battleford stories coordinator Carrie Clausen said in a statement the festivities could not proceed as “we are following the Government of Saskatchewan’s guidelines limiting outdoor gatherings to 30 people or fewer and indoor gatherings to 15 people or fewer.”

The City of North Battleford confirmed there will be no fireworks celebration for Canada Day this year as well. Previously a fireworks show was held on King Hill but the city is not able to proceed with the event due to the pandemic precautions.

“We simply cannot have them under the current public health orders because it will create a congregation of people, and we do have limits of 30 right now outdoors,” Mayor Ryan Bater said. “It is just not safe for us to be able to do that.”

Councillors discussed the issue at the city’s planning committee meeting Monday. The city plans to delay holding a fireworks show until later in the fall if possible, depending on the province’s guidelines.

Canadian Heritage is planning an online Canada Day celebration this year since the party in Ottawa is cancelled. It has also offered families some tips on celebrating the day with various activities to take part in at home. A number of performers will participate in a virtual show July 1 that will be available online. Some of the artists taking part include country music star Paul Brandt and French-Canadian tenor Marc Hervieux.
