Pie sales at Prairie North Co-op to support area food banks

The Prairie North Co-op (PNC) is hoping to bring in funds for area food banks through pie sales.

Pie Sensations got underway on Friday and will run until this Sunday, June 21, where each Co-op Pie sold will see $2 donated.

Director of Operations Ryan Schedlosky said since the inception of the fundraiser two years ago, $13,000 has been raised for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

“We are in year three now and we decided to change it up, obviously our food banks are in need at this time,” Shedlosky said. “We figured the money from each pie we sold going toward the food banks would be a great cause for pie sensations.”

Pie Sensations began as a response to the loss of a team member due to a heart related issue. The first year alone brought in almost $10,000 through pie sales and staff donations.

“Last year we sold around 1,600 pies in our stores and we are hoping to grow upon that this year,” Schedlosky said. “It would be nice if we could reach around 2,000 because that would mean a $4,000 donation to our food banks.”

Pie varieties include apple, blueberry, cherry, Saskatoon berry, pumpkin, and strawberry rhubarb and are being sold at all Prairie North food stores in Archerwill, Kelvington, Naicam, Melfort, Spalding and St. Brieux.

The PNC has made several donations to food banks since March as they have encountered an increased demand in supplies as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In May, PNC made a $1,000 donation to the Kelvington Food Bank for supply boxes for their clients as well as turkey donations around Easter time. A truck load of 15 to 30 pound grade turkeys were also delivered to the Melfort Food Bank at that time as well.

“We are excited to sell as many pies as we can so we can continue to do a lot of good things in our community,” Shedlosky said.
