Raider Guhle, Prince Albert’s Schneider invited to world junior camp

Prince Albert will be well-represented at Canada’s National Junior Team Sport Chek Summer Development Camp this summer.

Hockey Canada announced a roster of 41 players invited to attend this year’s virtual version of the camp, and on that list are Raiders defenceman Kaiden Guhle and Brandon Wheat Kings defenceman Braden Schneider, a native of Prince Albert.

The camp is the first step of preparations for the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship, and a chance for players to leave an impression on national team brass. Unlike most years, players and staff will not be gathering physically due to the COVID-19 pandemic, instead it will be a five-day virtual camp with a variety of sessions with a focus on player development through online education.

“We are excited to begin preparations for the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship with this group of 41 players and our full staff at our online camp, as we believe we have a good mix of veteran leadership and young talent that are eager to represent Canada during the holiday season,” Scott Salmond, senior vice-president of national teams for Hockey Canada said in a statement.

Schneider is attending the camp for the second time, aiming to crack the roster after being cut ahead of the tournament last year. As a 2001-born skater, this is Schneider’s last opportunity to participate in the Under-20 tournament.

The 2002-born Guhle is attending camp for the first time, but has plenty of experience with Hockey Canada having worn the Maple Leaf at the Under-18 and Under-17 levels previously.

The Western Hockey League will be well represented at the camp with 15 of 41 players coming from the league, along with four staff members.

Saskatoon Blades head coach Mitch Love and Vancouver Giants head coach Michael Dyck will serve as the two assistant coaches alongside head coach Andre Tourigny of the OHL’s Ottawa 67s. Moose Jaw Warriors general manager Allan Millar is serving as the Program of Excellence management group lead.

The 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship returns to Canada this December, with Edmonton and Red Deer set to host the tournament.
