A wet week in store for north-central and northeast Saskatchewan

Don’t expect the wet weather to disappear any time soon.

Rain is expected to fall off-and-on through Friday, and a significant amount of precipitation has already hit central and northeast Saskatchewan.

“It’s going to be a pretty soggy next few days,” Environment and Climate Change Canada meteorologist Terri Lang told northeastNOW. “We have a low pressure system that’s just kind of spinning around, and will stay spinning around over… east central regions of Saskatchewan and Manitoba.”

Lang said thunderstorms develop in the south and wrap around the low pressure system, continually feeding the moisture pattern.

The heaviest rain for today has likely already fallen, Lang said, with the heaviest amounts so far in the Saskatoon region with close to 40 mm of precipitation.

A reporter from Spalding told Lang they’ve had 31.5 mm, Melfort and Nipawin have seen around 22 mm, and Hudson Bay and Prince Albert have had about 10 mm so far, with more to come.

“We expect this rain to continue actually on-and-off for the next few days, and finally maybe start to see some drying and sunshine but it’s going to take a while, probably not until Saturday,” Lang said.

By the time the whole rain event is complete, 40 to 60 mm could fall in some pockets, in a band from Saskatoon through Hudson Bay. Northwest and southeast of that band will likely see less rain.

In addition to the rain, much cooler conditions have also settled in to the region.

“Very cool for this time of year, seasonal values are much higher,” Lang said.

The average high temperature for this time of year in Melfort is around 22 Celsius. The forecast high for Thursday is just 7 C, which is actually lower than the normal low temperature of around 9 C.
