Fairy Forest added to Spruce Haven Park, families invited to paint more doors

A magical new subdivision can now be found in the trees at the Spruce Haven Recreation area in Melfort.

The Fairy Forest is the latest addition to the tree line between the skate park and playground.

Program Coordinator Kathy Gray said the fairy doors were installed last week after painting sessions with adult and youth community members.

“It does give something to do while waiting for numbers at the park to go down and just adds a fun new aspect to Spruce Haven Park,” Gray said.

The city will host two more painting sessions for families this Thursday at 5 p.m. and Friday at 2 p.m. Families will need to pre-register as there are only 15 spots available and children are encouraged to bring a paint shirt with them.

“We want to include younger children if they would like to come but with not being to be hands-on and help them, we thought we would try the family activity and then all ages could be included,” Gray said.

All children must be accompanied by an adult at the sessions taking place at the Kerry Vickar Centre.

The painting activities are all part of the summer ambassador program being launched by the city.

“We were hoping this week to plan outdoor activities with the ambassadors and fairy tours at the forest but the weather is just not cooperating so hopefully all of that can happen next week,” Gray said.

Unfortunately, when the fairy forest was initially installed, there had been some vandalism in the Spruce Haven area and some of the fairy doors had been taken.

Gray said they posted about the missing doors on Facebook and fortunately was responded by a community member.

“Russ Floyd at Plus Industries actually had some new doors cut-out for us so we could expand and I just thought that was so nice,” Gray said.

There will be an announcement coming next week as well for an addition to the fairy doors as well.

The plan is to expand to other tree lines in the area including near the ball diamonds where children are often walking around while waiting between games.

“It gives a different aspect to our green space and just fun to walk through and find something,” Gray said.

There are currently three girls that have begun working as summer ambassadors and can be spotted around the city in their blue shirts.
