The Battlefords Union Hospital has been earmarked for funding for upgrades, among a number of projects planned for health facilities across the province.

In total, the province is investing $17.8 million for 87 health facilities for maintenance and upgrade projects.

The investment will also fund roof replacements, renovations to clinic spaces, generator and boiler replacements, and security improvements for various facilities in Saskatchewan.

Part of the funds will be used to improve the front entrance at Battlefords Union Hospital.

“The front entrance at Battleford Union Hospital will be upgraded to create a better appearance to the building and upgrade doors for accessibility,Saskatchewan Health Authority spokesperson Doug Dahl told battlefordsNOW in an email. “Planning is underway and we expect the work to begin in the next few months.”

Included in the facilities announced for upgrades are La Ronge Health Centre for a design for new ambulance bay and Melfort Hospital for a boiler replacement project.

The funding will also support Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon for a roof replacement on the building that dates back to 1978; Regina General Hospital for a water and sewer line replacement; Kindersley Hospital and District Health Centre for a generator replacement/upgrade project; and Shaunavon Hospital and Care Centre to replace the cast iron pipes in the acute care wing.

The funding is part of the province’s $7.5 billion two-year capital plan to help stimulate economic recovery in Saskatchewan.

“This increase in capital funding will help us upgrade existing health care facilities and improve the experiences of patients, residents and staff,” Health Minister Jim Reiter said in a statement. “Our government recognizes the importance of maintaining and upgrading facilities and supporting safe health care environments. By connecting this work to our province’s economic recovery, Saskatchewan residents will benefit from improved health care as well as an improved economy.”
