Île-à-la-Crosse event centre approved for replacement

The northern village of Île-à-la-Crosse has been awarded provincial funding to improve their Sakitawak Event Centre through the Municipal Economic Enhancement Program (MEEP).

Government Relations Minister Lori Carr announced the first 55 projects approved for provincial investment of more than $7.4 million under MEEP. Highlights of some the recently approved projects include a new community hall for the Northern Village of Île-à-la-Crosse.

Île-à-la-Crosse mayor Duane Favel told meadowlakeNOW the plan is to tear down the old Sakitawak Event Centre and replace it with a new facility at the same location. The space serves the community as a main hall for community events and minor sports.

“We’ve been having a lot of issues with it over the years,” he said. “So now instead of continuously renovating it, we’re just going to tear it down and build a wooden structure that will serve as our event centre.”

In an email to meadowlakeNOW a spokesperson for the Ministry of Government Relations explained MEEP will provide $150 million to municipalities across Saskatchewan to help stimulate economic recovery through investments in various types of infrastructure.

“The Northern Village of Île-à-la-Crosse’s application for their new community hall project was recently approved for $186,272 in provincial funding under the Municipally Owned Buildings and Assets category of MEEP,” the email read. “The northern village will manage the planning and construction of their hall project.”

Each project and its schedule is managed by the municipality receiving funding. All MEEP funding must be used by March 31, 2022.
