Catholic Family Services in Prince Albert is looking to get the ball rolling on some summer programming.

The organization is getting ready to bring back their Strengthening Families Program. The initiative is to help kids between the ages of seven and 16 along with their caregivers to improve their skills in a range of areas from communication to conflict reduction.

Tara Switenky, project coordinator for Strengthening Families said they are able to offer the program as phase four of the province’s reopen plan covers services like it.

Switenky said they have made some changes to how they are going to offer the services to protect the safety of people.

“We have condensed our program down to meet with the guidelines from COVID-19, we’re going to run it over a shorter period of time over the summer,” she said.

Catholic Family Services is planning to run the program this summer at the Gateway Mall. So far, the organization has been successful when it comes to recruiting people to deliver the program but are still looking to get some more participants involved.

“We’re attempting to get 30 families in the program this summer,” Switenky said.

Switenky explained they generally get people referred to the program through schools, which has made it harder for family services to get word out about the program with them being shut due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She added the number of programs they run and how many times they do it depends on how much interest they get.

“We’re just waiting for the community to let us know how much they need us this summer,” she said.

Families interested are encouraged to go online to the organization’s website where they can find more information. Switenky said there is a process to make sure the program is suitable for those who apply.
