St. Walburg School graduate awarded trades scholarship

A recent graduate from St. Walburg School has been recognized for his interest in skilled trades.

The Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission (SATCC) announced Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship (SYA) Industry Scholarships for 100 graduating high school students in 72 communities across the province.

St. Walburg School graduate Kelton Augustin, was awarded the Saskatchewan Construction Association Scholarship for his active pursuit in operating heavy machinery. He told meadowlakeNOW he applied after his Vice Principal Lori Bartee noticed his enthusiasm toward the trade and encouraged him to apply.

“My teachers and my principal said it would be in my best interest,” he said. “I sat down with my teachers and they helped me along with [the application].”

Augustin plans to take a year off to work before he begins his apprenticeship as a heavy duty mechanic. He says he’ll use his $1,000 grant toward tuition costs. This scholarship is to be issued within two years of his graduation. He encourages other students who may be considering entering the skilled trade work force, to persevere.

“Stick with it,” Augustin said. “There’s a high demand.”

Currently, more than 300 schools and more than 4,000 students are registered in the SYA program. Student enrolment in 2019-20 has increased by 26 per cent over the previous year.
