SMVS graduates attend traditional ceremony with some changes

Graduates at Senator Myles Venne School were still able to have a traditional ceremony June 26, but some minor changes had to occur to make it happen.

Altogether, there were 22 graduates from the school with 10 from Grandmother’s Bay, two from Sucker River and the remaining from around the local area. Since there were less than 30 graduates, Principal Robert Whiteman said they were able to move ahead with an outdoor ceremony with a maximum of 150 guests as per the Saskatchewan Health Authority guidelines.

“What we ended up doing is spacing all the chairs out,” he said. “Our front yard is layered, so the upper level is where the grads sat. When they first came out, we had an honour song from Indigenous Spirits and the grads marched along the side of the school.”

There’s a long sidewalk along the school each graduate and their escort walked along six-feet apart leading up the main entrance of the school. When they got to the front, they stopped and posed for photos, before the grad and escort both found their seats.

Some of the dignitaries invited were Lac La Ronge Indian Band Chief Tammy Cook-Searson, Coun. Gerald McKenzie, Director of Education Simon Bird and Cumberland NDP MLA Doyle Vermette.

Each graduate were also presented with a basket including a diploma, gifts and any awards they may have earned. Whiteman noted there was no handshaking and the weather turned out to be good. This year’s valedictorian was Jessica Charles.

“The advice I gave at the graduation was to take things slow, and to allow themselves to think about their decisions and hopefully they make the most wisest decisions,” he said. “I know we had some fairly good comments saying it was a nice graduation. It was outdoors and people were saying we should do outdoor ceremonies all the time.”
