Canada Day busy in the region, despite COVID-19 pandemic

Jun 30, 2020 | 2:00 PM

COVID-19 has altered the Canada Day plans of local communities, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do.

Residents in the northeast and north-central region have options when it comes to celebrating the country’s 153rd birthday.

Humboldt

The City of Humboldt is launching fireworks from the Uniplex area on the evening of July 1.

Residents can watch from their vehicles at the Uniplex North Parking Lot, Quill Centre, Humboldt Co-op, Bella Vista Inn, Humboldt Commons, Geschaft Mall, or from the comfort of their own home.

The fireworks will start at dusk, or approximately 10 p.m.

You can also take your family for a drive around Humboldt to look at all of the homes decorated as part of the Decorate Your House and Win contest. The public will vote on the winning house until 12 p.m. July 1.

Melfort

There are also fireworks in Melfort July 1.

The Canada Day committee has organized a fireworks show from the StoneGate Shopping Centre, south of McDonald’s.

Residents are encouraged to park at StoneGate but cannot leave their vehicles. Parking attendants will be monitoring social distancing rules and will also hand out celebration kits, which include Canadian flags, glowsticks, and souvenirs.

You can also view quilts in Melfort tomorrow. You can put your quilt on your yard or balcony on Canada Day. E-mail kvc@melfort.ca to add your address to the quilt parade map, and residents are encouraged to walk, bike, or drive around the city to view the quilts.

Melfort residents can also participate in the Canada Day Run/Walk/Roll. Join the Melfort Multi-K and your other fellow Canadians to get some exercise July 1. To register, or for more information, visit raceroster.com.

Nipawin

The Town of Nipawin is encouraging residents to dress up in red and white and take a picture of your family celebrating Canada Day, for a chance to win a family season swim pass.

You can also join Mayor Rennie Harper and the Nipawin Pandemic and Interagency Committee in celebrating Canada Day, by going on your front porch and making noise at noon July 1 to show your Canadian pride.

Carrot River and Pasquia Regional Park

A reverse parade will take place in Carrot River. Property owners are encouraged to decorate houses, lawns, or businesses. People can then drive or walk through the streets July 1 to see the pride residents have in their community and country.

A kids’ bike parade will be held at Pasquia Regional Park at 2 p.m. Drive-in style fireworks will be held at Pasquia at dusk July 1.

Hudson Bay

There will be Canada Day fireworks in Hudson Bay.

The Town of Hudson Bay and RM of Hudson Bay No. 394 have organized the Physically Distant Show, which they say will be seen high in the sky throughout the community.

The fireworks will be set off at about 9:45 p.m. at the football field.

All physical distancing measures must be followed. There will not be designated parking, and residents must park at least five metres away from other vehicles. People must remain in their vehicles, and each vehicle can only have members of the same household.
