Participants sought for cancer care engagement session

Métis residents of Northern Region 1, which includes the tri-communities, are invited to participate in an online engagement session about cancer care next week.

That’s according to Jim Brady Local 19 President Laura Burnouf, who is searching for 15 to 20 residents to take part in the virtual meeting scheduled for July 14 between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. She said the purpose of it is to understand citizen’s needs and concerns for health and wellbeing, as well as explore the experiences of Métis cancer patients and their families with cancer care.

“They want to find out how they went about it, so they can have a plan to help future people who are going through cancer treatment,” Burnouf said. “Whether having a place to stay or having enough funds to support your family, probably all of those things will be discussed. Their main objective is to promote discussion.”

The meeting itself is being arranged by the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer through a partnership with Métis Nation – Saskatchewan. Burnouf noted residents can also call into the meeting if they don’t have access to a computer or can access a computer on that date at the Northern Saskatchewan Indigenous Teacher Education Program building at Far Reserve. Rides are also available to the facility for those who need one.

Burnouf also explained the information from all regions in Saskatchewan will be compiled and a final report could be released by the fall. She hopes the document will be valuable to Métis families who are undergoing cancer treatment in the future.

“There are 12 regions and all but five were able to meet face-to-face,” Burnouf said. “Our meeting was supposed to be in May, but due to COVID, we weren’t able to have it.”

Those interested in participating in the session should contact Burnouf via Facebook or email at laronge@mns.work.
