Youth Haven following provincial guidelines for July programming

The Lac La Ronge Indian Band’s (LLRIB) Youth Haven Summer Camp is operating for the month of July.

The programming, which offers a learning experience and a variety of activities and traditional teachings, began July 14 and will continue until July 30. It’s meant for children between the ages of seven and up, and includes ages seven to nine on Tuesdays, 10 to 12 on Wednesdays and 13 and up on Thursdays.

“The youth haven is outdoors and we have some of our summer students who are out there,” said LLRIB Director of Education Simon Bird. “There was a deadline for registration for participants. We have a steady, small group and our group does not exceed 30 as per provincial guidelines.”

Bird explained Youth Haven is an opportunity to provide a place for children to feel comfortable and enjoy the outdoors. He noted it also helps with the physical and mental health of attendees, adding that’s accomplished by connecting and binding with fellow peers, as well as looking up to summer students running the program as role models.

For the most part, Bird said it was the summer students who are running the program. The LLRIB is assisting administratively, providing funding and keeping track of attendance.

“There’s lots of water and we have a lot of soap,” Bird said. “We do have hand sanitizer available at each one of our stations and we do have our youth participate. It’s basically all social distancing and outdoor programs.”

While the deadline for registration has passed, Bird encourages parents to contact Summer Student Employment Coordinator Jodi Hancheroff at the LLRIB office to inquire if there is space available.
