On top of their existing street credit, yard’s in Melfort could also win some prizes through Communities in Bloom (CIB).

Submissions of back yards as well as front yards and balconies are being accepted by Melfort CIB for a chance to win a planter from Equinox.

Peggy George with CIB said the planters are an incredible prize for any yard.

“They are the ones that we have on Main Street and the hanging baskets that the city has all down Main Street and the black planters on the perimeter of the city too are also from Equinox,” George said.

The backyard and front yard/balcony are two separate contests run through Equinox. The winner of the backyard contest will get a vista raised garden planter while the front yard winner will get a gateway self watering planter.

“Anyone can enter and the prize is just awesome, I would love to have one of these in my back yard,” George said.

Pictures can be sent to George at peggy.george@sasktel.net until August 15.

In the past, CIB awarded residents or businesses with ‘yard of the week’ or ‘attraction of the week’ but given the current situation with the COVID-19 pandemic, this is just a different way of recognizing the hard work that has gone into the tidiness of the community.

“Everything just has to be done differently and we aren’t out and about like we usually are but we want people to still participate in the program,” George said.

National CIB has been doing a lot of webinars with their volunteers during the pandemic and have begun several different contests to accommodate the uncertain times.

George said one of the new awards this year is the Green for Life Community Award which the Melfort Committee has entered into with the Lana Goodman Labyrinth at Spruce Haven.

“Just because judges aren’t coming this year, we still appreciate everyone’s efforts to get the weeds out of sidewalks, mow boulevards, and keep their yards neat and tidy,” George said.
