Drive-in movie serving as a fundraiser and nostalgia for Hudson Bay

The Town of Hudson Bay is looking to the past to bring the community together in the future.

As a chunk of the town’s traditional summer occasions – such as Heritage Day in August – have been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, a drive-in movie theatre will be set up on the outskirts of town.

“This hits home for a lot of people throughout our community, because there are a lot of memories of the old drive-in movie theatre in Hudson Bay,” Hudson Bay Community Development Director Jeanine Holowatuik said. “We’re bringing it back in a new fashion. We wanted to work within the current guidelines to have something for the community to enjoy and to look forward to.”

Because of sponsorship by McDonald’s Family Foods in Hudson Bay – the drive-in theatre will be free for residents, with parking passes available at the grocery store.

Due to provincial health guidelines, Holowatuik said there will a limit of 100 vehicle passes, bathrooms will not be provided, and concession is pre-paid only at the grocery store.

However, the town will use the latter to help fundraise. The Hudson Bay Modeon Community Theatre will run the pre-paid concession with $10 tickets for popcorn and drinks for two people.

“Like many other things, [the theatre] had to shut down. It’s still shut down right now but it’s going up to open up soon. We wanted to do something for the community, as well as a fundraiser for the local theatre,” Holowatuik said.

The drive-in movie in Hudson Bay begins on Friday, Aug. 14 at 8:15 p.m.
