Recreational options aplenty in Melfort during the hot weather

The heat as of late means people out enjoying the weather, but it’s also important to ensure social distancing in this time of COVID-19.

Recreational facilities in Melfort have been busy over the last few days, with community ambassadors running programming at the Brunswick and Burke playgrounds.

Director of Development, Planning and Community Relations Brent Lutz said the community ambassadors have been splitting up larger groups in order to comply with physical distancing protocols.

The Burke splash park operates Tuesday through Thursday from 1 to 5 p.m., and the paddling pool at Brunswick is open Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Lutz said when the paddling pool isn’t open at Brunswick Park, children can cool down by running through the sprinklers.

“In each of the parks they’ve been using the shelters for shade for some of the activities to help keep the kids cool,” Lutz said. He added the ambassadors are also providing bottled water to any children who show up and don’t have any with them.

The spray park at Spruce Haven is in operation from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.

“The public are expected to self-regulate and follow the appropriate regulations when they are using that facility,” Lutz said. That is also the case at the skate park nearby.

A family fun day is planned at Rotary Park Friday, July 23 from 2 to 6 p.m. Lutz said there will be lawn games and activities throughout the park. Children under 10 years of age should be accompanied by an adult.

Lutz said if anyone has left items behind at any of the recreational facilities or parks, it may be in the lost and found at city hall.

The weather is expected to cool slightly on the weekend, then temperatures approaching 30 Celsius will return next week.
