Teacherages broken into, vandalized in Sandy Bay

Teachers from Hector Thiboutot Community School in Sandy Bay were the recent target of thieves.

Northern Lights School Division Director of Education Jason Young confirmed six teacherages in the northern community were broken into earlier this week and vandalized. He noted one of the units was empty, but the others were occupied by staff.

The incident occurred either during the night of July 20 or the early morning hours of July 21.

“There was some damage to the units and some possessions taken, but nothing beyond that,” Young said. “This happened just overnight on one night in particular, so it wasn’t as if there was a wave of break-ins over a long period of time.”

School division officials are currently cooperating with Sandy Bay RCMP on the matter and passing on any information they can provide. Young couldn’t confirm if windows were damaged, but added such criminal activity doesn’t happen very often.

“It doesn’t seem like, from what we can tell, a number of individuals,” he said. “This is one time it happened, and we can’t dwell on one instance. We kind of just have to move forward.”
