Jam Street Music’s application for a development permit for a theatre and social club has been approved by Prince Albert city council.

As stated in a previous paNOW article, after owner Lucy James moved to Switzerland, she said she would manage from afar and with help from her students would continue music lessons.

Adreanna Boucher with Off the Cuff Improv and Interactive, who approached James with the idea, will be running the building as well as expanding it. The group will be running theatre shows of their own and will offer stage space to local comics and musicians.

What was previously an idea is now a reality with the application approved.

“It’s awesome, I’m so excited,” Boucher said. “We just see so much potential for that building and we see it as a great way to continue improving downtown and bringing more people to our downtown district.”

She added they do not have a date set as to when Off the Cuff Improv will start performing but they hope to have a show at the end of August or beginning of September. Even though they’re not open for shows yet they’re finding other ways to utilize their space.

“We do have a couple groups that are going to be coming in there to do a workshop and a filming and we’ve been talking to a couple theatre companies about them using it as rehearsal spaces so we definitely have some things in the works,” she explained.

Ward councillor Terra Lennox-Zepp said in a previous council meeting she has heard the public would welcome these changes to the facility.

“I’ve heard a lot of positive feedback from members in our community who say they want to see a facility like this, and this location is what they’re looking for,” Lennox-Zepp said. “And what a positive move to have this type of facility to be able to use for theatre, social club, music etc.”
