P.A. Minor Football cancels its Fall 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic

The Prince Albert Minor Football Association (PAMFA) has cancelled its Fall 2020 programs due to health concerns amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Taras Kachkowski with PAMFA told paNOW the decision was made with the safety of everyone in mind.

“Ultimately the COVID numbers are going in the wrong direction and because of the nature of our game, there are other sports out there where there is a certain amount of social distancing built into the way the game is played. But I mean football starts and ends every play with up close personal contact,” Kachkowski explained.

Another reason was because the programs have players in Prince Albert as well as in surrounding communities.

The programs affected by the cancellation are the peewee and bantam River Riders Kinsmen Football League teams, Atom 6-A-Side, and the Pass Punt and Kick Competitions.

He explained the concerns of transmission were too great and didn’t think it was worth sacrificing the positive image of the league.

“If we ended up being the source of an outbreak, we just didn’t think it was worth the risk,” he said.

Kachkowski said it wasn’t an easy decision to make.

“I’m more optimistic by nature and I think everyone on the board and the coaches, I mean, we’re all craving a return to some sense of normalcy,” he said. “Being able to offer our programs would provide to our players in the community and we kind of held out to the last possible moment to decide whether or not we could or should.”

He added he is crossing his fingers on a possible return to football next year.
