Melfort MLA talks campaign changes during COVID-19 and election year

If the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us one thing, it’s how to adapt to ever-changing circumstances, and that’s no different for candidates looking to get into, or remain in office come October 2020.

For Melfort MLA Todd Goudy, it’s his first real election. In March of 2018, Goudy was elected through a byelection to replace Kevin Phillips who passed away. Goudy said he’s excited to get to work with the full Sask. Party team this time around.

“This is everybody helping everybody,” Goudy told northeastNOW. “And I think the excitement of it is far greater with all of the candidates across the province, rather than just a few byelections.”

Another big difference in this year’s election, not only for Goudy, but for all candidates will be the likelihood of less door to door campaigning. Goudy said there’s two main things that voters need to know; who the candidate is as a person, and what the party’s platform is.

“As long as you can get that to everyone, and they feel comfortable with who you are and the party’s policies, I think that’s the main thing,” he said. “Then let everybody decide for themselves at the ballot box.”

Door knocking doesn’t seem to be in Goudy’s plans this year. He said a mailer will be going out soon and he’s encouraging voters to call him and discuss any concerns they may have.

He added he’d like to be out talking to people, but in the current climate, some people may not be comfortable doing so.

“I think we want to be available to people on their terms, rather than ours,” Goudy said.

Goudy added he hopes voters are comfortable calling him as the election nears.

Voters are scheduled to head to the polls on October 26, 2020.
