Mother and child rescued after spending the night on island

Aug 11, 2020 | 12:41 PM

A mother and a child were swept away by strong winds Monday as they were paddling in a canoe.

That’s according to Sucker River Fire Chief Maurice Ratt, who said the incident occurred during the afternoon on Wadin Bay. He noted a man had been watching the two canoeing when he saw the wind push them far out onto the lake.

The mother and child ended up spending the night on an island as the search and rescue took between 12 to 15 hours.

“We did not know which direction the wind took them, so we were searching until almost midnight, then we resumed our search at 5 a.m. this morning and we found them by 6 a.m.,” Ratt said.

Ratt wanted to thank the volunteers who assisted with the search, RCMP, EMS and the Canadian Rangers. He also encourages canoers to wear life jackets and keep a safety bag with them with items such as matches, a blanket and flares if possible.
