Candlelight vigil tonight in La Ronge to support Walking With Our Angels

Residents are invited to a candlelight vigil tonight at 7 p.m. at the urban reserve in La Ronge.

Men of the North Founder Christopher Merasty, who spent all of July walking from Air Ronge to Regina with Tristen Durocher, said the vigil is to raise awareness about high suicide rates in northern Saskatchewan, as well as to support Durocher and Walking With Our Angels.

The vigil will start with an opening prayer, followed by words from several individuals. Merasty mentioned he’s inviting families who encountered suicide, dealt with its effects or struggled with mental health to speak.

“Even community members who wanted to come up and speak about some of their family they have lost or the families who are struggling,” he said.

Merasty will be heading back to Regina tomorrow as Durocher is expected to attend a court hearing for bylaw violations at 2 p.m. The bylaws he’s alleged to have broken while at the Legislative Grounds are no camping overnight, no fires, no permanent structures and no demonstrations outside of 9 a.m. and 11 p.m.

Merasty hopes the court hearing Thursday can be adjourned, so Durocher, who is on his 13th day of a fasting ceremony, will be able to complete it on Sept. 13.
