Drive-in fundraiser more crucial for Humboldt Big Brothers Big Sisters during pandemic

Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Humboldt and Area held drive-in movie events prior to the coronavirus pandemic, but the upcoming one has never been more crucial for them.

During the group’s first drive-in in 2019, 106 cars were parked to catch a movie and help fundraise for Humboldt BBBS’ programming, which helps children match with their role models and gain confidence.

Humboldt BBBS lost one of its major fundraisers – a lady’s charity golf scramble – and another small fundraiser, as they couldn’t operate under the provincial health guidelines amidst the coronavirus pandemic. Because of this, Humboldt BBBS Community Development Coordinator Jodie Hergott said they’re leaning on the success of their drive-in more than ever.

“The drive-in carries a little bit of weight with it for being crucial to our fundraising budget,” Hergott said. “We’re hoping we can exceed last year’s attendance. This year, we realize people are looking for things to do. There have been some restrictions with the pandemic that are limiting travel and making staycations very popular.”

Along with fundraising, Humboldt BBBS’ operations has also been adjusted due to the pandemic. All money raised from the drive-in will go towards the group’s programming, which has been more expensive than previous years.

“We’ve had a change in the way we deliver our programs… involving technology and virtual meetings,” Hergott said. “We do have some matches who are meeting in a regular sense but abiding by social distancing rules. But we’re also capitalizing on virtual contact meetings; getting kids in touch with a mentor when they don’t necessarily have access to technology. There are some costs.”

Following the drive-in, Hergott said Humboldt BBBS is continuing to plan other fundraisers before Christmas that follow provincial health guidelines.

The drive-in will take place Thursday, Aug. 20 at Farm World parking lot in Humboldt. Tickets can be purchased online. Hergott said distancing rules will be enforced for lineups to concessions, washrooms, or when attendees are out of their vehicles.
