Brunswick crosswalk safety project underway in Melfort

When students return to Brunswick School in Melfort this fall, crossing the street will be a lot safer.

Brunswick Street between Mcleod Ave. and Bemister Ave. will be closed and crews have begun work on the crosswalk safety project.

Director of Development Planning and Community Relations Brent Lutz said this project has been on the radar for the city after a safety study was conducted last year at all of the public schools in Melfort.

“Funding was received by the city earlier this year to make the safety improvements at the intersection of Brunswick Street and Stovel Ave,” Lutz said.

Grant funding of $57,000 was given to the city for the project and $17,500 from the same program was used to identify the study that was done last year.

The North East School Division in partnership with the city will undertake improvements to the sidewalks on the east side of Brunswick Street at the same time the intersection work is being conducted.

Additions to the intersection will include sidewalk bump-outs designed to shorted the pedestrian travel distance and improve pedestrian visibility for motorists.

“This will have the effect of calming traffic as well,” Lutz said.

Motorists are asked to watch and follow detour signs while work is underway. The project is expected to be complete ahead of the new school year.

“We are looking forward to having this project complete,” he said.
