National award for Goodman Labyrinth in Melfort

The Goodman Labyrinth at Spruce Haven in Melfort has received another award at the national level of Communities in Bloom (CIB).

Nominated by Melfort CIB, the Green for Life Community Award recognizes projects that benefitted the public through the development of green spaces.

Peggy George with CIB said the labyrinth ticked off the award criteria boxes for community spirit, innovative idea, environmental sustainability, and community impact.

“It is one of the places that is always on our tour when the judges come to town and they are always impressed with materials used, the layout of the land and maintenance,” George said. “It really is a beautiful spot.”

The labyrinth was installed in August of 2014 by Larry and Brenda Goodman in memory of their daughter Lana. The ribbon cutting was on August 17, which was Lana’s birthday.

The idea to create the labyrinth space came from the many things that Lana was interested in according to Brenda.

“I had a picture in a folder at some time and it just suited her, the things she enjoyed like the outside, and community things she had done,” Brenda said.

The City of Melfort gave the Goodman’s the green space to develop the labyrinth along with help of memorial donations. The labyrinth has very much evolved into a space that the entire community cares for and loves in many different ways.

“A labyrinth is not only for memories but for any kind of a journey of your own,” Brenda said. “It’s your own journey and to find some peace and can also be for happy things.”

The Spruce Haven Park recreation area is not only home to the labyrinth but also the skate park, community garden, spray park and accessible playground.

“It is developing into a wonderful place and I really think that the labyrinth had a lot to do with kicking that off,” George said.

The Goodman Labyrinth received the Communities in Bloom national award for landscape in 2019 as well with help in promoting it by the Melfort CIB group.

“It’s really a way of Lana’s spirit living on and that was the intent and that is the purpose and that is what it is doing,” George said.
