Turtleford SARCAN facility temporarily closed after employee tests positive for COVID

Aug 17, 2020 | 5:55 PM

SARCAN Recycling has closed its Turtleford facility, located at 200 – ThirdAvenue South after an employee tested positive for COVID-19.

In a news statement on Aug. 16, SARCAN reported the employee is self-isolating following guidance from the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA). The individual is receiving the care and treatment needed for recovery.

The employee last worked at the location on Aug. 6. The individual is presumed to have been symptomatic from Aug. 4 to Aug. 6.

“Although SHA has stated that the risk of transmission to the general public is presently considered low, we join the SHA in advising members of the public who visited the Turtleford SARCAN depot to self-monitor for symptoms of COVID-19 for 14 days from the last date they visited, and to seek a testing referral by contacting HealthLine 811 in the event that you experience symptoms of COVID-19,” Sean Homenick, SARC/ SARCAN Recycling communications manager, said in the news release.

At the advice of SHA, SARCAN enacted several safety measures to further limit the spread of COVID-19.

The facility temporarily closed the Turtleford location to the public. The earliest this depot can reopen to the public is Aug. 20, only if no other employees have been diagnosed as positive.

Before reopening, the facility will complete extensive sanitization in all common areas.

SARCAN requested employees who were in close contact with the employee to contact Healthline 811 to receive a referral for COVID-19 testing. As well, all other employees were advised to self-monitor for symptoms of COVID-19. The company asked employees who have symptoms of COVID-19 to self-isolate and contact HealthLine 811 for a testing referral.

“The closure of this location is temporary,” Homenick wrote. “We will be reopening this location as soon as it is safe do so, following the guidance of the Saskatchewan Health Authority. Customers are encouraged to follow SARCAN’s Facebook page for announcements on when this location will reopen to the public. Protecting the health and safety of our SARCAN teams across the province is at the core of our business. We are taking these actions to ensure we preserve the health and well-being of our employees, their families, and our customers.”

The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) issued a statement Aug. 15 asking those who visited the SARCAN in Turtleford from Aug. 4 to 6 to self-monitor for COVID-19 symptoms.

The SHA stated due to contract tracing, it identified this SARCAN facility as a possible location of transmission and is “urging Saskatchewan residents to follow public health measures and personal safety precautions to prevent the spread of the virus.”

People are asked to follow the province’s COVID-19 protocols of physical distancing by two metres, frequent hand washing and self-isolating if any COVID-19 symptoms develop.
