Melfort summer programming into final days

The City of Melfort’s summer programming is coming to an end this week.

The eight-week community ambassador program was new this year as the COVID-19 pandemic brought challenges when it comes to social distancing protocols.

Recreation Programmer Shannon Marshall said on a typical year, the program can be more of a drop-in format.

“We had to make sure that we had registration numbers so we could keep participant numbers lower in the program just to meet health guidelines,” Marshall said. “Everyone did seem to adapt to that fairly well.”

Participation numbers were still high but keeping them low in one space at one time was the goal. The Brunswick and Burke playgrounds which boast water features also hosted different themes and arts activities to go along with them. Kids aged five to eight were on hand from 1-2 p.m. and ages nine to 12 attended from 3-4 p.m.

The ambassadors helped out with the Spruce Haven fairy door painting, a family community bingo and senior’s bingo, the Amazing Race and a disc golf workshop. A bike parade and chalk art day and a family outdoor game days were offered as well.

The Melfort Moose on the Loose was new this year where the ambassadors would hide a toy moose for families to find and return for special prizes.

“We incorporated a bunch of different activities this year due to COIVID and lack of events happening,” Marshall said. “We wanted to make sure that there were things that everyone could participate in.”

The goal this year was to diversify and expand the parameters of the program and made it more accessible to other people while still reaching the children and youth community.

Community ambassadors also spent Friday’s throughout the summer at different parks including Rotary and Spruce Haven.

The Brunswick playground will still have activities available today from noon to 5 p.m. and then the Burke playground tomorrow.

Marshall said the community can look forward to some fall recreation programming in the coming weeks.
