The elections for the Resort Village of Candle Lake and the District of Lakeland are nearly a week away, and the advance polls open this weekend.

Advance polls are intended for voters who are physically disabled; have been appointed as election officials; or anticipate being unable to vote on Aug. 29, the day of the election.

For the District of Lakeland the advance polls will be held Saturday at Christopher Lake Legion Hall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Returning officer Tammy Knuttila told paNOW she is hoping for a good turnout.

“The province has delayed it from July and I think in July there were probably more people up at their properties,” she said.

In term of issues, Knuttila said some of the big items include bears, garbage, and the quality of the lake water.

The candidates for Reeve are Cheryl Bauer-Hyde and Walter Plessl.

For Div. 1, which Includes Rural Christopher Lake, Bell’s Beach, Doran Park, Spruce Point, and Clearsand, the candidates are Treena McAlpine and Meagan Cook.

The Div. 4 candidates (Guise Beach, McIntosh Point, Murray Point, and Okema Beach) are John Stauffer and Mary Sawchuk.

The councillors in divisions two, three, four were elected by acclamation. Respectfully listed in order, they are Cheryl MacMillan, Doug Oftedal, and Jim Rudolph.

For the Resort Village of Candle Lake, advance polls run Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Candle Lake Hall. Returning officer Colleen Lavoie was busy Friday setting up, making sure all the COVID-19 related health regulations are followed.

“We’re fortunate that the hall is big enough. We’ve had measurers out here making sure we have six feet in every direction,” she said.

In the 2016 election, 1,292 votes were cast, and Lavoie said she was expecting at least that in this election too.

The candidates for Mayor are incumbent Borden Wasyluk and Terry Kostyna.

There are also four council seats up for grabs and the candidates are Jonathan Attig, Ron Cherkewich, Steve Mitchell, Debra Hunter, Doug Allan, Kelly Guard, Valerie Manton, Clarence Buckoski, Brian Wojciechowski, Joe Barczai, and Shayne Morley.

Both elections have been scheduled to take place on Aug. 29 and on that day the polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

A mail-in balloting option has been offered for voters in the Candle Lake election. Over 250 people have registered.
