Backpacks filled with school supplies will go out next week for students in need with some help from Cindy’s Independent Grocer in Melfort.

An $850 cheque was presented to the Melfort Salvation Army for the ‘Operation Fill-A-backpack’ program on Friday. A total of $425 was brought in at the tills in the store with Cindy Quinton matching that total.

Captain Rick Robins told northeastNOW the program is important for the area.

“The backpack program serves a lot of kids and families withing our community and it really helps our families and the kids get a great start to their education,” Robins said.

Applications for backpacks are still available at the thrift store.

“I think a lot of people are still feeling unsure about school this year so a lot haven’t filled their applications out,” Robins said. “We encourage those to get those in because backpacks are going out on Monday.”

Students that will be learning from home can still apply for a backpack as well.

Donations of school supplies and financial donations are still being accepted at the Salvation Army.

“A big thank you for everyone’s support and trusting us with helping kids in the community,” Robins said.
