Residents of Nipawin reminded to only place recyclables in blue bin

Residents in Nipawin are getting a reminder that only recyclable products go in their recycle bins.

MTN Disposal, the contractors who pick up residents’ recycling, have noticed a trend as of late according to the Town of Nipawin’s Chief Administrative Officer Barry Elliott.

“What they’re finding is that when they unload the recycling containers at their sorting facility oftentimes they’re finding a lot of other ‘true garbage’ in there, things that cannot be recycled, things that may be dangerous for them to handle, that sort of thing,” he said.

In the past, Elliott said they’ve seen a number of dangerous items in those recycle bins like needles, and even some animal carcasses.

Normally, if there are some non-recyclable items in that load, the whole load would be taken to the landfill and dumped there, which in turn takes up space in the pit at the landfill.

Now MTN Disposal has decided to use notes on door hangers that will be placed on the recycle bin if it is not properly filled or placed. The reasonings listed on the note are “could not safely access cart”, “could not safely empty cart”, and “hazardous/unacceptable items in cart”. Elliott said he’s happy to see MTN Disposal take the initiative on this.

“They’ve seen this problem continuing for some time and every now and then I know it gets to the point where they want to give people a reminder,” he said. “So, I appreciate that MTN is doing this on behalf of recycling efforts in the town.”

Elliot said there is the ability to use bylaw enforcement if necessary when it comes to waste disposal, but they hope to not have to use it.

There’s also resources on the Town of Nipawin website that show what should and should not be going in the recycle containers.
