Swinnerton wins 2020 Junior Men’s Lobstick on home course

He may be from Saskatoon, but Alex Swinnerton was right at home at the Waskesiu Golf Course when he went on to win the 2020 Coca Cola Junior Men’s Lobstick.

Swinnerton golfs out of the Waskesiu Golf Course and has had a cabin nearby since he was a youngster.

On that course where’s spent most of his summers, Swinnerton won so many trophies and plaques on Friday that he couldn’t hold them all.

After beating Will Blake on the 16th hole, Swinnerton got to hold the trophy for winning the Junior Men’s Lobstick in his fourth year. And on Monday, Swinnerton finished with the Low Qualifier, as he was the only golfer to finish under par, as he shot -2. He also got plaques to take home as keepsakes.

“It means a lot to me because it’s my home course. You can’t really ask for much more,” Swinnerton said. “There were lots of great players out here, but I managed to putt well and hit the ball pretty nice. It worked out.”

On whether or not home course advantage played a role, Swinnerton said it played a small part but said any number of players could have won it.

“Maybe a little bit, just because I know the putts and where to hit the ball,” Swinnerton said. “But it’s a golf course, right? Anyone can take it. I managed to pull it out.”

The finals match between Swinnerton and Blake went back and forth. Swinnerton had just a one-stroke lead after the front nine, which he earned after a nice birdie on Hole 8.

But Swinnerton made another birdie from the edge of the fringe on Hole 10 to take a two-stroke lead. Swinnerton then extended his lead to three with a par on the 13th. After both players drew the next three, Blake ran out of holes to come back into the game as both players shook hands on the 16th green.

“I got off to a good start, but he just kept making putts and I couldn’t capitalize,” Blake said. “It is what it is. He putted really well and played really good.”

On the consolation finals side of the Championship Flight, Darien Herlick and Brett Leonard needed all 18 holes and two playoff holes to decide the victor. It was Herlick that eventually came away with the victory.
