Town of Nipawin ending Utility Deferral Program

Residents of Nipawin have a few weeks to get things in order before having to pay their utility accounts.

As of Sept. 30, the Town of Nipawin is ending its Utility Account Deferral Program, meaning all utility accounts with arrears or outstanding balances are to be paid to avoid disconnection.

Chief Administrative Officer Barry Elliott said there have been lots of residents using the program, and that’s a positive.

“But it is time to start to get the revenues coming back in,” he said. “And our costs covered.”

Elliott added the program was set out to help those residents with the hardships that were to come from the COVID-19 pandemic. He said that as things progressed and more became known about the virus and its effects, as well as federal subsidies, it was time to end the program.

“For those individuals that are still going to find it problematic,” Elliott told northeastNOW. “We’re encouraging them to contact the town and we can discuss some re-payment, or payment options, and allow them to have some continued support.”

Elliott said there are around 600 delinquent accounts right now. He said it’s unknown how much revenues have been down as a result.
