Virtual Terry Fox Run planned for Prince Albert in 2020

Despite the challenges and restrictions posed this year by COVID-19, the journey Terry Fox started 40 years ago to raise awareness about cancer and support for research, will not be disrupted.

Organizers of the Annual Terry Fox run event have committed to keep the tradition going, albeit in a much different format with a virtual run on Sept. 20. In Prince Albert, participants can walk, jog, run or wheel on the track at the Alfred Jenkins Field House, or they create their own route someplace else. Local committee chair Danielle Poisson explained the scheduled time from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. opens up a lot of options.

“Every year we have a starting point and everyone just starts thee same time as a group, but this year we are just going to have it opened up throughout the day and if you want to walk and track your steps that way, you can do that,” she said.

Five years ago, there were only nine participants in Prince Albert’s Terry Fox Run event, but in more recent years numbers have flourished. Between 30 and 40 people participated last year. Poisson said she hopes to see the trend continue this year.

Registrations have started and Poisson encouraged everyone to do so online. She added the online page is the also best method to make donations and pledges, but added there will be a table set up on the day of the event at the Alfred Jenkins Field House from 12 p.m to 2 p.m (only cheques will be accepted).

On Saturday, Sept. 12, the annual Terry Fox Relay will take place at Harry Jerome Track at 1:30 p.m. with a friendly competition between the Prince Albert Police Service, Prince Albert Fire Department, and Parkland Ambulance.

“They are also going to be donating a $500 cheque each so I think that’s very exciting they are still wanting to compete against each other this year,” Poisson said.

Last year’s event in Prince Albert event raised over $11,000 for cancer research, and Poisson said the committee’s goal this year was to raise $12,000.

The Prince Albert Terry Fox Run Committee has requested participants stay home if they are feeling sick and/or experiencing any COVID symptoms; and to practice social distancing and COVID guidelines. Water stations will not be provided at the Fieldhouse, so participants have been asked to bring their own water.
