Nipawin’s Kyle Froehlich is celebrating yet another successful season.

The 18-year-old was recently awarded Top Pitcher of the Year and the Charlie Meacher Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the year in the north division of the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League.

“This was my goal going into this season, to achieve these awards and so I worked hard this past offseason to get where I am,” Froehlich said. “It felt good to be acknowledged for what I have done.”

The love for playing ball came from playing catch with his dad and his brother.

“Once we started putting in the extra time and hitting at a diamond, I started to excel during games,” Froehlich said. “It created a spark in me that made me love and enjoy the sport.”

Last year, Froehlich was named player of the year by Baseball Saskatchewan. He began playing for the AAA Muenster Red Sox when he was in his midget year.

He is currently attending a junior college in Colby, Kansas where he is spending time practicing and training during the day.

“My next goal would be to play down here in Colby,” Froehlich said.

As can be expected, things look a little bit different when it comes to training amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

In buildings, players need to wear masks but those can be taken off when outdoors and socially distant. They are practicing in groups of less than 10 and coaches have them rotate on and off the field.

“Infielders get together and do ground balls, and outfielders together can do fly balls and pitchers are still able to get their work in playing catch so it’s been good,” Froehlich said.

Froehlich extended thanks and gratitude to his family for support and his coaches along the way.
