Dozens partake in annual Ice Wolves hockey camp

Dozens of young athletes have been busy learning new skills on the ice at the La Ronge Ice Wolves Killer Hockey School this week.

The four-day camp began Monday and is taking place at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre. Ice Wolves Head Coach Kevin Kaminski and Associate Coach Gaelan Patterson are leading the event, along with an additional goalie coach and prospective players. The camp is designed for youth between the ages of five and 16.

“We have 42 kids in it,” Kaminski said. “With COVID, [we] can only have 26 players on the ice at a time, so we’re just about full.”

Participants have been separated into two groups and they never cross one another as part of coronavirus social distancing measures. The younger group starts first at 9 a.m. and train for two hours, before the older group takes the ice for two hours in the afternoon. Kaminski noted there is no dryland sessions, so its easier to keep the groups apart.

The camp focuses on a number of fundamentals including powerskating, crossovers, c-cuts, agility, balance, starting and stopping, as well as passing and shooting. Kaminski added the first three days are focused on training, while Thursday is reserved for games.

“We try to cover a little bit of everything with both groups about what we were taught when we were at younger ages like them for hockey school,” he said.

The next major event for the Ice Wolves will be the team’s main training camp Sept. 18. Kaminski mentioned he’s hopeful the regular Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League season will begin Oct. 9.
