Sask. NDP promises universal child care

With the provincial election coming up in October, Saskatchewan NDP leader Ryan Meili is promising new policies on child care if he’s elected.

Meili promised universal child care at a press conference in Saskatoon on Friday.

“Child care has been on the minds of many families over the last few months,” said Meili. “The need for affordable child care is very important.”

“If we have the opportunity to form government, we will bring in universal 25 dollars a day childcare. We will also do a full review of our child care system to make sure we are addressing all the key things that need to be addressed.”

Meili went on to add that he believes the NDP’s policies are a steep contrast compared to the Sask. Party’s.

“When we invest in child care we improve people’s lives and we improve the economy. In 2017 when the Sask. Party had the opportunity to address child care they made cuts.”

Saskatoon child care advocate Lindsay Sanderson spoke about the current system of child care in the province.

“Parents are paying more than they can afford. Too many parents are forced to choose between quality child care and other essentials, our kids deserve better and so do families,” said Sanderson. “Affordable child care is essential in allowing women to participate in our workforce.”

“Those early years are so incredibly crucial in ensuring our kids get off to a strong start in life.”

The election takes place on Oct. 26.
