Highway 24 between Spiritwood and Chitek Lake will receive an upgrade.

According to a media release, the Government of Saskatchewan announced 50 kilometres of Highway 24 will be rebuilt.

“Saskatchewan’s Growth Plan has a goal of building and upgrading 10,000 km of highways over the next decade,” Saskatchewan Premier and Rosthern-Shellbrook MLA Scott Moe said in the release. “This construction season we have built or upgraded more than 1,000 km of Saskatchewan Highways, putting us well on our way of reaching our goal of 10,000 km in the next decade. Highway 24 is a large part of this goal. It will be upgraded to a structured pavement highway, which will improve the road surface and enhance safety.”

The project will be part of the $7.5 billion two-year plan by the government to build a stronger province and stimulate the economy.

The project will be completed in two different stages. The first 21 kilometres from Spiritwood to Leoville will be started this fall. The second part from Leoville to Chitek Lake is expected to be tendered by the spring and construction is scheduled to start in 2021.

The highway is located west of P.A. and provides access to Leoville, Pelican Lake First Nation and Chitek Lake. According to the release, the area has high vehicle traffic with more than a thousand vehicles a day north of Spiritwood. Weekly construction updates can be found here.
