Fall Festival approved to close down section of Centre Street in coming weeks for celebration

Local event organizers have received city approval to shut down the 200 and 300 blocks of Centre Street for the first Fall Festival in Meadow Lake.

Organizer and business owner Tammy Wigton said the event was originally intended to be a customer appreciation day for her salon customers, though has expanded to include local businesses and home-based businesses for a two-day sidewalk sale.

“I wanted to bring the community together with a celebration of how well we did [during the pandemic],” she said. “It was a trying year for everybody and it was a whole new learning aspect of how to function in society.”

Wigton said the adjustment society has made during the pandemic over the last six months may be compounded by a retreating indoors over winter. The celebration plans to acknowledge the sacrifices made by everyone in the community in keeping COVID-19 numbers low, she said.

Fellow organizer, Amber Ambroziak explained vendors will be offering a variety of unique and interesting wares and have been invited from Meadow Lake and area. Businesses from other surrounding communities will have use of the street also.

“Proceeds raised through table rental fees will help cover the costs of promoting the event as well as the live band scheduled to be in attendance, while other musicians and artisans are also welcome to take part as sort of a busker-style festival,” Ambroiziak said in an email. “I’m excited to be a part of the first-ever Fall Festival and, hopefully, it is something that will catch on and possibly, one day, grow in terms of both size and vision.”

Dirt Road Maniacs are slated to perform live on both Friday and Saturday from a flat-bed truck on Centre Street.

COVID-19 safety measures will be in effect and strictly enforced throughout the duration of the event.

The event will take place Friday Sept. 18 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday Sept. 19 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Fall Festival is in its planning phases and looking for additional vendors to participate in the celebration.
