Smile cookie campaign to benefit P.A. hospice

Prince Albert residents will have a tasty opportunity to support the Rose Garden Hospice Association next week.

Tim Hortons’ national weeklong Smile Cookie campaign kicks off Monday. In P.A., local restaurants will be fundraising for the construction of the hospice. All the proceeds from the purchase of $1 smile cookies will go towards the cause.

Franchisee Cheryl Sander says it’s an initiative that’s close to her heart. She explained her own experience visiting her mom in hospital with cancer impressed on her the need for the comfortable, homey environment, hospices provide.

“[In the hospital] you know they’re in good care,” Sander said. “But when you see the blueprints and the visual pictures of the Rose Garden Hospice, you just can’t wait you want to get to the end goal because you know how many people it will help.”

Local franchisees Sander and her father Ed Zaparaniuk have committed to fund the hospice through the Smile Cookie campaign for the next three years.

Marina Mitchell with the Rose Garden Hospice Association says that’s exciting news.

Though the pandemic slowed fundraising, Mitchell says efforts are going well.

She explained it’s possible construction of the facility will begin this fall, although it may be pushed to the spring depending on a number of factors including funding.

To date, around $2.4 million out of the $4 million total goal has been raised.
