Local groups to benefit from Fuel Good Day at local Co-op’s

A number of charities across Western Canada will benefit from Co-op’s Fuel Good Day taking place on Tuesday.

Fuel Good Day sees 10 cents from every litre of gas pumped donated to local charities in Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and northwestern Ontario.

Locally, Prairie North Co-op will be donating the money they raise to North East Outreach and Support Services (NEOSS). Prairie North has gas bars in Melfort, Archerwill, Kelvington, Naicam, Spalding, and St. Brieux. General manager Terry Tremblay said it’s important to help these organizations out this year as the COVID-19 pandemic has made it difficult for them to fundraise.

“They’re unable to have to big galas, and get togethers where they normally do fundraising, and have auctions,” he said. “So, NEOSS has been one of those charities that we’ve tried to work with.”

Not only will money be raised through gas at Prairie North Co-op locations, but $1 from every Co-operative Coffee and Big Cool slush drink will also go towards the funds for NEOSS. On top of that, Tremblay said every gas bar location will have a burger barbecue for $5 to continue adding to those funds. There won’t be any seating at the gas bars for the barbecue due to COVID-19, but Tremblay said they still want to maximize fundraising efforts.

“By running our barbecue this way, we’ll be able to still raise the money, send some people home with food for lunch,” he said. “And make people aware of all the good that NEOSS does in the community.”

Last year, Prairie North Co-op raised about $7,500 to go towards Sask. Wildlifes ‘Fish in School’ program. Tremblay said this year; they’re hoping to raise $10,000 for NEOSS.

“So many of the businesses and business partners that we’ve reached out to are going to make an special extra effort to line up at our gas pumps that day,” Tremblay told northeastNOW. “And we’ll try to make sure our service is good, and we’ll change some lives on Tuesday.”

A number of other local groups will receive funds from other Co-ops as well. Handiworks in Nipawin will benefit from the Lake Country Co-op gas bar there, and in Choiceland, the Torch River Riders will receive funds from Lake Country.

Parkland Co-op will see funds go towards the Porcupine Plain and District Museum, as well as the Hudson Bay Health Care Auxiliary. Midway Co-op is donating to the LeRoy Daycare, and Watson Region Daycare, and Humboldt Co-op is donating to Futuristic Industries.

Beeland Co-op will be donating its Fuel Good Day funds to a number of groups including the Arborfield Fire Department, Tisdale Kidsport, Northeast Regional Victim Services, and the Northeast Early Child Intervention Program.
