Melfort MLA talks MEEP funding at Monday press conference

Melfort MLA Todd Goudy held a press conference at the Melfort Hospital on Monday, Sept. 14 to talk about the Municipal Economic Enhancement Program (MEEP) funding that has come to the City of Melfort, as well as the rest of the constituency.

A total of $860,221 has been allocated in the City of Melfort alone, while over $1 million more has been allocated elsewhere in the Melfort constituency. In Melfort, a total of five projects got funding from MEEP, including repaving Broadway Ave. N, rehabilitation of local walking trails, and water line replacement on Groat Drive. All three of those have already been completed, according to Goudy.

“The fact that it was shovel ready, it should be done fairly quickly,” he said. “That was sort of the plan, is to have things that can move the economy forward and get people back to work sooner rather than later.”

Other projects in Melfort to receive funding are the virtual City Hall, and a back-up generator at the Kerry Vickar Centre. Not all of the MEEP funding comes immediately and Goudy said the rest should come soon.

Goudy said it’s great to see the projects coming together so fast, and that this was another opportunity to keep Saskatchewan moving, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Saskatchewan people have come through difficulties in the past,” Goudy told northeastNOW. “And this is just another example of working with communities to get people back to work, and it’s gone well across the province.”

A total of $7.5 billion is to be injected into infrastructure projects in Saskatchewan over the next two years. Goudy said it’s important to get this funding where it’s needed because some of the infrastructure in the province is aging, and it’s time to get those fixed and updated.

“We need to do our part in providing for our kids, the infrastructure that will allow them to live and work, and raise their kids as well,” Goudy said. “So, we’re doing a lot of that over the next two years.”

On top of talk about the MEEP funding, some conversation was brought up regarding the Melfort Hospital and projects surrounding it. The Melfort Heliport project is well on its way, but one thing still remains to be seen at the hospital. A CT Scanner has been on the wish list for the City of Melfort, the hospital, and the entire constituency for many years and the government did make room for it in the upcoming budget. Goudy said there should be a timeline released for when it is to be installed in the coming weeks.
