Council considers Christmas decoration awards

Prince Albert city council is considering an awards program that would allow residents to nominate neighbours with exceptional Christmas decorations.

The city already has two similar awards programs, one for individuals who assist neighbours by clearing their sidewalks of snow (the Golden Shovel) and another for well landscaped yards (the Golden Spade).

Coun. Dennis Nowoselsky, who suggested the idea for the Christmas decoration award, told paNOW he lives near someone who has won the Golden Shovel numerous times. He said he’s seen the impact these kind of incentive programs can have.

“Everybody in the neighbourhood has started to kick their yards up and make them nicer,” he said. “So I think it has a positive affect on the whole neighborhood for a small investment on the city’s part.”

Although there was some debate around the council table if this kind of promotional program should be left to the private sector, like the popular Twinkle Tour last put on CKBI and Canadian Tire in 2014, the majority of councillors ultimately supported Nowoselsky’s idea for a city-backed program.

Council is set to give the Christmas decoration award program, to be funded at $300 annually, final approval at Monday’s city council meeting.
