Humboldt Chamber hoping to draw traffic downtown during Food Truck Wars

The Humboldt Chamber of Commerce is hoping to see increased traffic to the downtown area with Food Truck Wars making a stop in the community.

On Sept 25 and 26, ‘fair food’ will be available in a take-out fashion on Sixth Avenue from Main Street to Tenth Avenue.

Executive Director Brent Fitzpatrick said it is important to bring traffic to the downtown businesses.

“These businesses are all asked to stand up and support community organizations and fundraisers and now when they need it most, they need you,” Fitzpatrick said.

With the cancellation of the annual Streetfest event in the summertime, those downtown businesses definitely took a hit on top of the losses with the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Businesses within the Business Improvement District are eligible to be part of the event as vendors free of charge.

“That is business that this year of all years, we have missed than ever before,” Fitzpatrick said. “Just being able to offer an event that draws people back down there is just a boom for those businesses that operate within the Business Improvement District (BID) area.”

The Businesses within Humboldt Downtown BID are eligible to be part of the event as vendors free of charge. Fitzpatrick encourages registration from those businesses to ensure proper social distancing protocols are followed.

Food Truck Wars were also in Nipawin, Tisdale and Melfort over the past couple of months and were able to successfully abide by all of the public health guidelines to reduce the spread of the coronavirus.

Proper spacing guidelines, hand wash stations and other safety measures will be in place at the Humboldt event.

“They have done this before and have experience on how to manage traffic flow, and so I have a great deal of confidence in their ability to do that,” Fitzpatrick said.

When it comes to the effects of the pandemic on the businesses in Humboldt, Fitzpatrick said they have been fairly lucky all things considered.

There is a limited number of every variety of store in Humboldt which in comparison to larger centres is a good thing.

“In places where there are multiples of each type of genre of retail operation, one is going to be a weak link,” Fitzpatrick said. “Here, because there is not a lot, the demand is still there from consumers.”

He added it definitely has been slow but still stable and when things began to reopen there was a large sigh of relief for those businesses.

The BID, Chamber and City are all teaming up to kick-off the fall season and Moonlight Madness will still go ahead in November.

“A major percentage of revenue for businesses is generated in the six weeks leading up to Christmas so we want to make sure we have the best launch possible,” Fitzpatrick said.

Food Truck Wars will be open on the two days from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

“Come on downtown and support these businesses and also keep them in mind in your fall and holiday shopping,” he said.
